Substance abuse and acute hospital admission

Pages 35-36 | Published online: 12 Jul 2009

Abstract

One hundred acute admissions to Armidale Hospital were questioned carefully about their use of various substances with a potential for addictive misuse. The results confirmed that acute hospital admission correlates with a higher than average rate of substance abuse. The relationship with alcohol abuse was particularly strong. One-third of all females and one-half of all males surveyed were regularly using alcohol at risk levels.
