Abstract
Methadone is seen as a useful tool in the management of “street” narcotic drug dependence. The use of methadone constitutes part of a treatment plan in appropriate persons. “Methadone Programs” are one of the range of options which should be available for the treatment of narcotic drug dependence. Residential “therapeutic community” style programs and out-patient drug free programs should also be available.
Whenever instituted the prescription of methadone should be accompanied by individualised attention being paid to the social, psychological and physical needs of the patient.
This paper will outline the purpose and goals of the Queensland Methadone Program, document present planning initiatives and examine some issues that may be regarded as contentious.
