Abstract
The history of the development of the concept is outlined.
Recent prospective data is inconsistent with retrospective and cross-sectional studies and leads to the conclusion that the addictive personality is a myth.
The lessons from the concept include : a better understanding of reasons for drinking; the notion of unmet dependency needs and the importance of social support.
The management of dependency is discussed.
