One of the problems frequently associated with metropolitan population decentralization is differential social change between cores and rings. The debate over the existence of social polarization has been particularly marked where London and the South East of England are concerned. The paper analyses the changing socio-economic structure of economically active males in Inner and Outer London, the Outer Metropolitan Area and the Rest of the South East from 1961-71-81. It is shown that there has been considerable social polarization between Inner London and the rest of London and the South East over this period.

Un des problèmes qui est souvent associé à la décentralisation de la population métropolitaine c'est l'évolution sociale différentielle des noyaux par rapport aux anneaux. Le débat sur l'existence d'une polarisation sociale a été particulièrement marqué pour ce qui est de Londres et du Sud-Est de l'Angleterre. L'article analyse l'évolution de la structure socio-économique des hommes au travail au centre et à la périphérie de Londres, dans la zone métropolitaine extérieure et dans le reste de Sud-Est aux années 1961, 1971 et 1981. Il s'avère qu'il a eu lieu une polarisation sociale non-négligeable entre la zone centrale et à la fois le reste de Londres et le Sud-Est, sur cette période-là.

Eines der Probleme, das oft als mit der Dezentralisierung der Bevölkerung der Hauptstadt verbunden betrachtet wird, ist der unterschiedliche gesellschaftliche Wandel im Kerngebiet und seinen Aussenringen. Die Debatte über das Bestehen einer gesellschaftlichen Gegensätzlichkeit war besonders auffallend, wo es sich um London und den Südosten Englands handelt. Diese Abhandlung analysiert die sich wandelnde sozio-ökonomische Struktur im Erwerbsleben stehender, aktiver Männer in der Innenstadt und den Vororten Londons, den Randgebieten des Grosstadtgebiets und dem übrigen Südosten von 1961 bis 1971–1981. Es wird gezeigt, dass eine beträchliche gesellschaftliche Gegensätzlichkeit zwischen Londons Innenstadt und der übrigen Stadt samt dem Südosten besteht.
