Abstract
Theories of alcoholism are considered, as is the variation in individual response to alcohol, and the reasons for this. The association between alcohol use and conditions such as hypertension and neuropsychological impairment is outlined and the causal status of the alcohol is discussed. Flexible intervention strategies are called for.
