The natural history of alcohol and drug use — Implications for treatment goals and strategies

Abstract

Some of the factors which underly the development of alcohol and drug dependence are discussed. The importance of encouraging the natural healing processes, reconciling the patient's and the doctor's goals and establishing multi-dimensional criteria of success are emphasised.
