The clinical assessment of coma

Abstract

We begin with some kind of basic awareness, some kind of basic ability to “know” or “sense” or “recognise” that something is happening. This is a fundamental theoretical and experiential given. We do not know scientifically what the nature of awareness is, but it is our starting point. (Professor Charles Tart, 1977)
