Travel: A health hazard?

Abstract

Since 1973 surveillance of returning travellers and visitors to Scotland has been undertaken. A total of 14227 persons were surveyed and of these 37% reported illness, mostly alimentary disorders. It is estimated that over £11 million is spent on the subsequent treatment of travellers' illnesses, many of which are preventable. The hazards associated with travel are not new but we have failed to benefit from experience.
