Abstract
The enumeration of bacterial faecal indicators within Lake Albufera near Valencia (Spain) is reported together with a comparison of the efficiencies of two methods of Salmonella isolation using modified RIO medium. The occurrence of pathogens in the absence of faecal indicators clearly suggests that existing EC Directive standards should be reappraised whilst the effectiveness of the Salmonella isolation techniques appears to be dependent upon the level of faecal contamination.
