Abstract

Faith leaders and their congregations have been recognised as holding the potential to engage positively in peacebuilding activities in a post-conflict context. Alongside this, faith-based development organisations (FBDOs) have the ability to engage with these constituencies to increase the peacebuilding impact of their activities. This paper presents a framework of faith engagement for FBDOs to work with local faith leaders and people of faith to develop the peacebuilding impact of development activities. A reworking of Anderson's “Do No Harm”, it encompasses the areas that FBDOs need to address in order to be effective peacebuilding actors in a faith context.

Sian Nicholas is a doctoral candidate at Coventry University researching faith-based development organisations and inter-faith peacebuilding. She worked in Afghanistan for six years for a faith-based development organisation specialising in primary mental health care. During this time she wrote an article on the contribution of men and boys in gender equality for “engendering equality” and also published “A Practical Guide to Mental Health Problems” which was translated into Farsi and Pashto. Since her return from Afghanistan Sian has continued to work in an advisory capacity for both international and local NGOs working in development. She completed her field research on faith-based organisations working in Northern Uganda in October 2010 and has been developing a theoretical framework to inform a practical toolkit to assist FBDOs in the role of peacebuilding.
