ABSTRACT

An integral part of the pig and pork value chain in Uganda is trader activity. This article reports on a study that quantifies the nature of these traders in Mukono district, a major pig and pork marketing site adjacent to Kampala, Uganda. Little guidance is available from the literature about the sampling of traders for this kind of research, and the second task addressed by this study is to test sampling mechanisms and report on their influence on the statistical results generated. Different sources of sampling frame provided different samples, with some limited overlap. The two samples exhibited distinctly different profiles of traders.

Un élément intégral de la chaîne de valeur de l’exploitation porcine en Ouganda est l’activité des traders. Cet article rend compte d’une étude qui a quantifié la nature de ces traders dans le District de Mukono, un lieu de marketing majeur pour l’exploitation porcine, proche de Kampala. La littérature sur l’échantillonnage des traders pour ce type de recherche n’offre que très peu de directives, et le deuxième objectif de cette étude était de tester des mécanismes d’échantillonnage et de rendre compte de leur influence sur les résultats statistiques obtenus. Différentes sources pour le cadre d’échantillonnage ont permis d’obtenir des échantillons différents, avec un chevauchement dans des proportions limitées. Les deux échantillons ont distinctement révélé deux profils différents de traders.

En Uganda, la actividad de los comerciantes constituye un elemento que integra la cadena de valor del cerdo y los productos derivados de éste. El presente artículo da cuenta de un estudio orientado a cuantificar el tipo de comerciantes que pueden encontrarse en el distrito de Mukono, uno de los principales mercados del cerdo y sus productos, adyacente a Kampala, Uganda. En tanto la literatura existente sobre el tema ofrece poca orientación respecto a cómo realizar el muestreo de comerciantes en este tipo de investigación, la segunda tarea que abordó este estudio se dirigió a probar los mecanismos de muestreo e informar de qué manera influyen en los resultados estadísticos generados. Las distintas fuentes vinculadas al marco de muestreo proporcionaron diferentes muestras, registrándose algún traslape limitado. Las dos muestras seleccionadas produjeron perfiles de comerciantes muy distintos.
