Abstract
The paper has three purposes. First, to consider how the audit task was undertaken in independent Lithuania during 1918–40. Second, to consider the conceptions and execution of that task when Lithuania was incorporated into the USSR. Third, to provide an assessment of the developments since the restoration of independence.
