Abstract
Laboratory screening tests are often used to exclude physical illness in psychiatric patients, but there is no recognised consensus as to which tests should be routinely used. UK Consultant Psychiatrists selected at random were asked by questionnaire to identify these laboratory tests which they use for routine screening. There was wide variation in practice, with significant changes in practice since a previous survey in 1981. Most psychiatrists use routine laboratory screening for inpatients, but few for outpatients. The usage of laboratory screening tests by psychiatrists is variable and inconsistent. This may reflect a relative lack of sound evidence on which to base practice.
