Addressing psychosexual dysfunction in neurological rehabilitation settings

Pages 251-260 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

Methods of maintaining sexual health and wellbeing following neurological trauma or disease are poorly supported in rehabilitation services. Whilst physical therapies for functional loss are often available, opportunities for expression of sexual need are less well established. A major reason for this failure centres around the cultural and social taboos concerning discussion of sexuality and the common misconception that the sexual needs of those with disabilities are lower. Adoption of supportive practices within rehabilitation settings can go some way towards overcoming this deficiency and the present article outlines a strategy which has been found beneficial for those who experience a wide range of neurotraumas including spinal injury, multiple sclerosis, lower motor neurone difficulties and spina bifida. The strategy is considered appropriate within the majority of rehabilitation settings, and for application by a wide range of staff groups.
