Abstract
A ten item postal questionnaire eliciting views on lithium and its effects on the kidney, was sent to all psychiatrists (consultants and trainees) in the South East Thames Regional Health Authority area. The results of 116 respondents indicate a high level of disagreement amongst psychiatrists. Senior registrars' views differed the most from published recommendations in the literature. The implications of these findings are discussed, especially the need for a nationally agreed treatment protocol.
