Diogenes Syndrome- how should we manage it?

Pages 113-116 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

Diogenes Syndrome, or self neglect in the elderly, is discussed, including description, history and management. It is proposed that it is often a positive reaction rather than a passive deterioration. The rights of the individual must be considered and in the absence of illness, management must be by persuasion and consensus. The number of people involved in support must be kept to a minimum, to avoid further alienation of the patient from society.
