Abstract

Abstract This article provides a critical review of the literature on insight in psychosis. The concept of insight has poor construct validity, being differently defined in different studies. Although there is broad agreement that it is multi-dimensional, intercorrelations between these dimensions are weak. The whole may amount to nothing more than the sum of the parts and this amalgamated concept provides little additionalinformation. Futhermore, there are risks associated with such a sweeping construct and two are discussed in particular (1) over-simplified application of the literature in clinical practice may lead to false assumptions and (2) the risk to the self-identity of individuals with psychosis from engulfment into the devalued patient role.
