Mental health and employment: Shaping a new agenda

Pages 131-140 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

Drawing on evidence from Britain, Europe and the United States it is argued that there is a need to give employment high priority as a realistic and legitimate aim of secondary mental health services. The principles which should underpin mental health employment services are examined and it is suggested that they should be viewed through the conceptual framework of the social model of disability. A framework is proposed for a locality service constellation which focuses upon support into open employment and job creation measures.
