Abstract
The model of assertive outreach is currently being widely debated in the United Kingdom, with many services keen to include this mode of practice within current mental health service frameworks. The challenge in the UK is to establish a unified model that offers the flexibility to be adapted to the needs of specific client populations, while upholding the critical characteristics associated with positive outcomes. Assertive outreach services are defined, the evidence is reviewed and critical elements identified. The authors argue that positive outcomes will be dependent on these critical elements being included in the development of assertive outreach services in the United Kingdom.
