Developing world rehabilitation strategy I: Find a different kind of hero

Pages 835-837 | Published online: 07 Jul 2009

Abstract

Purpose. To expose the heroism of persons who have dedicated themselves to rehabilitation in poor and isolated regions.

Methods. Editorial, observation of leadership behaviors.

Results. Many of the leaders and heroes of rehabilitation in poor and isolated places come to the field out of necessity and personal dedication, not from a career choice.

Conclusions. For rehabilitation to succeed and expand we must help these heroes become mentors of a generation of local people for whom rehabilitation is a career. Even small donations and volunteerism can do incredible things if this strategy is kept in mind.
