Pages 481-484 | Published online: 20 May 2008

Notes

1. The Hare-Clark system, i.e. a proportional preferential system with five electorates, multi member constituencies, a quota of 16.7% to gain a seat and the preferences of unsuccessful candidates flowing on until entirely exhausted.

2. For examples, listen at http://www.abc.net.au/elections/tas/2006/news/stories/1595269.htm?elections/tas/2006/, accessed 30 November 2007.

3. The Greens suffered a 1.5% swing against them; the government lost 2.6%, while the Liberal Opposition gained 4.4%. On the significance of this gain by the Liberals, see Herr Citation2006.

4. Going into the four-week election period one poll had the Greens polling 36% in the electorate of Denison, outpolling Labor at 35%, with Labor at only 32% statewide and minority government looking likely.
