Notes

1. Gorleben was on the border with the former East Germany, but post-unification it is in the middle of the country. Radioactive waste is also stored in the north-east at the Polish border.

2. In November Vattenfall announced its intention to sue the German government, seeking compensation for Germany's phase-out of nuclear power at the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in Washington, DC (Spiegel 2011).
