The gathering of academics from Canada, the USA, Europe and Australia gained much from the comments offered by Roger Simon, Prof. Emeritus at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, who also attended the workshop. His untimely passing in October 2012 prevented his paper from being included in this issue, but all these papers along with the ongoing conversations, benefited from his comments at the workshop. It is in his memory that this issue is dedicated. I wish to thank Acadia University, the Canadian Research Chair Secretariate, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, The Fulton Foundation, and THEN/Hier for their support of the Beyond Pedagogy workshop held at Acadia University. My appreciation and thanks to Robert Janes and Gerry Conaty for their sagacious advice, editorial comment and support for this special issue.
