Alissandra Cummins

Alissandra Cummins GCM, FMA, MA, BA(Hons) is Director of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society and Board Chair of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. She has served as Founding Chairperson of the Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC, 1989–1996), President of the International Council of Museums (ICOM, 2004–2010). Over the last 25 years she has played an active role at both national and international levels engaging in the negotiations, contestations and interpretations of international policy and cultural heritage instruments in a variety of roles including Deputy Chair of the World Heritage Committee (2010–2011); Chair of the International Advisory Committee of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme (2007–2009); Chair of the UNESCO Executive Board (2011–2013). She is a lecturer in Museum and Heritage Studies at the University of the West Indies. For her contributions to the fields of heritage and museum work she was conferred with Barbados’ Gold Crown of Merit, Honorary Membership of ICOM, as well as membership of the Cowrie Circle of the Commonwealth Association of Museums.
