‘Marriage‐like relationships’ and social security in Australia

Pages 17-30 | Published online: 11 Jul 2008

Abstract

This article considers the treatment of marriage‐like relationships (MLRs) in Australia. It examines the assumptions about family life that are embedded within the concept of MLRs. It examines the ideological and historical underpinnings of the MLR concept and the ways in which these locate the role of women within such relationships. It is particularly concerned with the relationship of women to the benefits system when they are within MLRs.
