Abstract
This paper is concerned with the teaching of poetry. It begins with a brief look at attitudes towards poetry within our educational institutions. This is followed by a discussion of the relationship between the teaching of poetry and the teaching of reading skills to children and foreign language learners. Finally a new approach for the teaching of poetry is presented. This approach is based upon the development of a specific set of skills involved in reading poetry.
