Encountering the Other: one Indigenous Australian woman's experience of racialisation on a Saturday night

Abstract

This article narrates the complex ways in which race and gender play out for the author, an Indigenous woman, when she encounters a man one Saturday night. It highlights how as a ‘raced’ being she finds herself placed in the position of the Other even whilst attempting to enact resistance and agency. The encounter raises questions about discourses of race and the impact on Indigenous women when blackness and whiteness converge, and reveals how whiteness is privileged. The narrative unpacks the nuances of desire, blackness and whiteness and how interracial relationships in Australia are performed in everyday life viewed through the lens of an Aboriginal woman.

Este artículo narra las complejas formas en las que la raza y el género se materializan para la autora, una mujer indígena, cuando se encuentra con un hombre un sábado a la noche. Destaca de qué manera, como un ser “racializado”, se encuentra ella misma ubicada en una posición de Otro aún mientras intenta establecer resistencia y agencia. El encuentro plantea cuestiones sobre discursos de raza y el impacto sobre las mujeres indígenas cuando la negrura y la blancura convergen, y revela cómo la blancura es privilegiada. La narrativa desentraña los matices del deseo, la negrura y la blancura y cómo las relaciones interraciales en Australia son performadas en la vida cotidiana, visto desde la óptica de una mujer aborigen.
