Abstract
Individualisation, which is increasingly promoted in European welfare states, tends to be absent from policy discourse as well as housing studies in Japan. It is largely because the ‘family as a unit’ is still a dominant approach in their household finance, social security and taxation systems, which also reflects women’s lack of home ownership. However, recent demographic trends such as falling marriage rates, low fertility and increased female labour participation indicate significant diversification in women’s life-course. Thus, today women making their own financial investment and house purchase have increasingly become popular practice. In this context, a new approach beyond the conventional ‘family as a unit’ may be required in the development of a new social contract. Drawing on data from qualitative research conducted among women in their 30s, this article explores the relationship between financial independence, household decisions and asset holding of partnered women in Japan, which reveals contested dimensions of women’s independence and autonomy in household and family life. Through the lens of home ownership, it considers the importance of promoting individual assets in order to foster gender equality in marriage.

La individualización, cada vez más promovida en los estados benefactores europeos, tiende a estar ausente del discurso político y de los estudios de vivienda en Japón. En gran medida se debe a que la “familia como unidad” es todavía un enfoque dominante en su economía hogareña, seguridad social y sistemas impositivos, lo que también refleja la falta de propiedad de viviendas por parte de las mujeres. Sin embargo, tendencias demográficas recientes tales como las decrecientes tasas de matrimonio, la baja fertilidad y el aumento de la participación laboral de las mujeres indican una diversificación significativa en el transcurso de la vida de las mujeres. Por lo tanto, que las mujeres hoy hagan sus propias inversiones financieras y compra de viviendas se ha vuelto una práctica cada vez más común. En este contexto, podría ser necesario un nuevo enfoque que vaya más allá del convencional abordaje de la “familia como unidad”. Basándose en datos de una investigación cualitativa llevada a cabo entre mujeres en sus 30 años, este artículo analiza la relación entre la independencia económica, las decisiones del hogar y la posesión de bienes por parte de mujeres en pareja en Japón, lo que revela dimensiones disputadas de la independencia y la autonomía de las mujeres en su vida familiar y hogareña. A través de una óptica de la propiedad de vivienda, considera la importancia de promover los bienes individuales para estimular la igualdad de género en el matrimonio.
摘要
欧洲福利国家中逐渐提倡的个人化，在日本的政策论述与住宅研究中倾向缺席。这主要是因为“家庭作为基础单位”在日本的家户财政、社会安全与课税系统中，仍是具支配性的方法，并同时反映出女性缺乏家户所有权。但晚近诸如下降的结婚率、低出生率以及增加的女性劳动参与等人口趋势，意味着女性生命轨迹的显着多样化。因此，今日的女性自行进行理财投资和购买房屋，已逐渐成为普遍的行为。在此脉络中，发展新的社会契约时，或许需要超越传统的“家庭作为基础单位”之崭新方法。本文运用对三十多岁的女性进行质化研究取得的数据，探讨拥有伴侣的日本女性的财务独立、家户决定和资产拥有之间的关係，揭露女性在家户及家庭生活中的独立及自主性的冲突面向。本文透过家户所有权的视角，考量提倡个人资产以促进婚姻中的性别平权的重要性。
