Abstract
The main topic of this study is to contribute to the study of female sacred mobility in the Middle Ages by proposing a new approach for the analysis of historical sources (wills and bequests), combining quantitative and qualitative methodology. We have set three aims: (1) Reinforcing the female presence within historical documents through their empirical analysis; (2) Reflecting upon female participation in the public sphere; (3) Investigating women’s agency in religious terms. Concerning the geographical context of the research, the historical sources have been retrieved from the Historical Archives of the Italian Region of Apulia (Italy); where we have studied the above mentioned topics in relation to the devotion to St. James (Spain). The first part of the article introduces female mobility to the city of Santiago de Compostela; then, it moves to the forms of devotion to the Apostle St. James the Greater and female pilgrims in Apulia. The present empirical study has the differential to propose a transversal interpretation of the selected historical texts according to the following criteria: (1) Devotion to the Apostle St. James the Greater (2) Female devotion. As well as reinforcing the use of these historical documents to investigate female social behaviour, the research contributes to the study of the female role within the geography of pilgrimage in the following terms: sacred mobility; territorial history and experiential and devotional value.
Resumen
El tema principal de esta investigación es contribuir al estudio de la movilidad sagrada femenina en el Medioevo proponiendo un nuevo enfoque para el análisis de las fuentes históricas (testamentos y legados), combinando metodología cuantitativa y cualitativa. Nos propusimos tres objetivos: 1) Reforzar la presencia femenina en los documentos históricos a través de su análisis empírico; 2) Reflexionar sobre la participación de las mujeres en la esfera pública; 3) Investigar la agencia de las mujeres en términos religiosos. Con respecto al contexto geográfico de la investigación, las fuentes históricas han sido obtenidas de los Archivos Históricos de la Región Italiana de Apulia (Italia); donde estudiamos los temas mencionados anteriormente en relación a la devoción a Santiago (España). La primera parte del artículo presenta la movilidad femenina hacia la ciudad de Santiago de Compostela; luego, pasa a las formas de devoción al Apóstol Santiago el Mayor y a las mujeres peregrinas en Apulia. El presente estudio empírico tiene la diferencia de proponer una interpretación transversal de los textos históricos seleccionados de acuerdo a los siguientes criterios: 1) devoción al Apóstol Santiago el Mayor; 2) devoción femenina. Además de reforzar el uso de estos documentos históricos para investigar el comportamiento social femenino, el trabajo contribuye al estudio del rol femenino en la geografía de la peregrinación en los siguientes términos: movilidad sagrada; historia territorial y valor vivencial y devocional.

本研究的主题透过提出分析历史来源（遗嘱与遗产）的崭新方法，结合量化与质化研究方法，对中世纪的女性宗教能动性之研究作出贡献。我们定下三大目标：（1）透过经验分析，强化女性在历史档案中的存在；（2）反思公共领域的女性参与；（3）探讨女性在宗教方面的能动性。考量本研究的地理脉络，从（意大利）普利亚大的意大利区域之历史档案中取得历史资源；我们在该地研究上述主题与对圣詹姆士（西班牙）的奉献之关联。本文的第一部分引介圣雅各德孔波斯特拉城市中的女性能动性；本文接着转向对使徒圣詹姆士的奉献形式，以及普利亚大区的女性朝圣。现今的经验研究具有差别，根据以下标准，对选定的历史文本提出横断式解释：（1）对使徒圣詹姆士的奉献；（2）女性的奉献。本文强化这些历史档案的使用以探讨女性的社会行为，同时就下列概念而言，对研究女性在朝圣地理中的角色做出贡献：宗教能动性；领域历史和经验与奉献价值。
