Notes

Data for this study were produced by the Soviet Interview Project, supported by a contract from the National Council for Soviet and East European Research to the University of Illinois Urbana‐Champaign, James R. Millar, Principal Investigator. The analysis and interpretations in this study are solely those of the authors. The questionnaire for the Military‐Civilian Interview Project was designed by Zimmerman, Berbaum, and Norman Nie of the University of Chicago. Berbaum was supported by an SSRC postdoctoral fellowship in Russian and Soviet Studies and a research contract from the National Council for Russian and East European Research. We wish to thank Marc Bennett and Deborah Yarsike for their research assistance, Nie for his contribution to the design of the questionnaire, and Joseph Berliner, Harold Jacobson, Viktor Sergeev, Allan Stam and Craig O'Neil for comments on an earlier draft.
