Abstract

This article reports on a study of 100 Chinese parents and 100 Chinese teachers in Hong Kong who were interviewed on a range of questions relating to their views on the purposes of early childhood education. In Hong Kong early childhood education refers to kindergartens and nursery centres. The administrative division in Hong Kong between kindergarten and nursery centres leads to community views whereby nurseries are perceived as being child minding centres only. The study analyses and compares the views of both parents and teachers showing where congruence and differences occur.

Cet article est le compte‐rendu d'une etude portant sur 100 parents chinois et 100 enseignants chinois a Hong‐Kong. Parents et enseignants ont été interrogés sur leurs points de vue relatifs aux buts de I'education des tout jeunes enfants. A Honq‐Kong I'education des tout jeunes enfants concerne les jardins d'enfants et les écoles maternelles. Du fait de la division administrative existant a Hong‐Kong entre les jardins d'enfants et les ecoles maternelles, la société perçoit les écoles maternelles comme de simples centres de garde d'enfants. L'étude compare et analyse les opinions des parents aussi bien que celles des enseignants, faisant ainsi apparaître les points de conformité et de divergence d'opinions.

Resumen

Este articulo informa sobre un estudio de 100 padres chinos y 100 profesores chinos en Hong Kong, los cuales fueron entrevistados con una serie de preguntas relacio‐nadas a sus opiniones sobre los propositos de la educacion infantil. En Hong Kong, la educación infantil se refiere a jardines de infancia y guarderías. La división administrativa en Hong Kong entre jardines de infancia y guarderias produce opiniones en la comunidad por las cuales se considera que las guarderias son centros donde solamente se cuida a los niños. El estudio analiza y compara las opiniones de ambos, los padres y los profesores, demostrando donde ocurren congruencias y diferencias.
