Weed Control in Tropical Forest Plantations Using Glyphosate

Pages 177-181 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

Trials using glyphosate were carried out in forest plantations in Papua New Guinea. Weed control in three types of plantation was examined:

a.

plantations in grasslands dominated by Imperata cylindrica (L.) P. Beauv.

b.

plantations with mixed grass and broadleaved weeds.

c.

plantations established in logged over rainforest and having vines, creepers and remnant woody broadleaved species as weeds.

Glyphosate at the rate of 2 kg/ha or more was effective in all situations and the herbicide shows considerable promise as a simple post-emergent herbicide in forest plantations with mixed weed populations.
