This special issue of the EJHET contains a collection of articles on various aspects of the work of Antonio Genovesi (1713–1769). Among the papers, there is the last contribution of our colleague and friend Pier Luigi Porta who passed away in 2016, long before the reviewing process for the issue was completed. Pier Luigi’s research contributed considerably to our knowledge and understanding of the Italian Enlightenment. For that reason, the editors of the Journal, as well as Francesca Dal Degan, guest editor of the Genovesi special issue, have decided to publish his paper as it was originally submitted, introducing only very minor editorial corrections.

As we all know, Pier Luigi Porta’s research interests were nevertheless much larger. Reflecting the richness of his work as well as his unfailing commitment to the promotion of the history of economic thought as an academic sub-discipline, this special issue includes an obituary from his colleague and friend Richard Arena.

The other papers in this special issue were refereed according to the usual standards of the EJHET. We thank the referees for their valuable work.
