Abstract

Akpodiete, O.J., Ologhobo, A.D. and Oluyemi, J.A. 1997. Production and nutritive value of housefly maggot meal on three substrates of poultry faeces. J. Appl. Anim. Res., 12: 101–106.

The fly larvae were cultivated in three substrates of poultry droppings viz: fresh poultry droppings (FPD), poultry droppings mixed with groundnut oil (PDV) and poultry droppings mixed with palm oil (PDP). The yield for FPD (25.64g/kg poultry droppings) was significantly (P<0.25) lower than the yields for PDV and PDP (103.09 and 93.61g/kg poultry droppings) which were statistically similar. Their crude protein contents were 52.5, 56.9 and 54.3% for FPD, PDV and PDP, respectively. This and the amino acid composition indicated that the fly larvae were similar to animal protein. The total microbial counts for FPD, PDV and PDP were 1.35 x 106, 1.24x106 and .86 x 106, respectively, which was on higher side. On the basis of microbial population, yield, protein and amino acid composition, PDP production technique is recommended for maggot meal production.
