Abstract

Meimandi Parizi, A. and Fathi, M. 1999. Post-dehorning wound management in goats. J. Appl. Anim. Res., 15: 149–152.

The dehorning wounds of twelve adult goats were managed in three ways: washing with isotonic saline solution; washing with saline and disinfection with 5% povidone-iodine (PI); washing with saline and then local treatment with penicillin G procaine solution (150,000 units per milliliters). The healing of wounds was evaluated on the basis of radiographical examination of frontal sinus, clinical and bacteriological examination of wound. In the first group, the frontal sinus showed radiopacity and wound repair in some goats failed. In the second group, the radiopacity of frontal sinus decreased, the infection was controlled but the wound healing was partially delayed. In the third group the radiopacity of frontal sinus and infection were not observed and wound healing was optimal. Thus local treatment with penicillin G after saline washing is recommended.
