This in vitro and animal model study was performed to find a safe, effective, inexpensive and easy-to-use surgical glue on hemorrhagic aorta. Bioglue was prepared using glutaraldehyde (10 or 50%) and human serum albumin (20 or 45%). Bovine aorta (3.5 cm dia, 4–6 mm wall thickness was cut to strips and joined end-to-end with Gelatin Resorcin Formaldehyde (GRF) or bioglue. All combinations of glutaraldehyde and albumin produced bioglue with satisfactory shear and tensile strength, which were better than GRF. A needle hole was created in ventral abdominal aorta of 9 (6 treatment, 3 control) crossbred dogs and then the glues were applied to prevent the oozing of blood. After 6 weeks, the animals were sacrificed for histopathological study of puncture site. No significant difference was noticed comparing the intima, media and serosa layers between the treatment and controls. No hemorrhage, acute inflammation, marked fibrosis, necrosis or granulomatous inflammation were evident. Thus bioglue may be considered as a safe, available and cost-effective glue to be used in operations without any complications.
