MODEL STUDY OF SCOUR FROM CANTILEVER OUTLETS

ABSTRACT

This paper presents results of an experimental study of scour hole geometry produced by impinging circular jet of water of a cantilever outlet with variation in discharge intensity, drop height and submergence of soil bed. Experiments have been performed at three Froude numbers (1.20, 2.40 & 3.60) on 1.50 cm diameter cantilever pipe outlet placed at various elevations above the erodible bed having different submergence conditions. A non-dimensional number called modified discharge intensity (DI) has been used to correlate the scour hole parameters with drop height and submergence conditions. It has been observed that as the elevation of cantilever pipe outlet above the erodible bed increases, the scour hole becomes deeper, wider and shorter. The plan dimensions of scour hole increase with the increase in the depth of submergence.
