A Numerical Investigation of the Water Impact of an Arbitrary Bow Section

Abstract

Simulation of the free surface flow that occurs in the transverse planes of high-speed planing crafts has been researched by many authors. Moreover, the water impact phenomenon of two-dimensional sections is especially important and is examined in order to gain a good understanding as to what happens in the cross-sections of high-speed crafts. In this context, water impact problem of a general bow section becomes particularly critical for the planing hulls. In the present paper, finite-volume method in conjunction with volume of fluid scheme is used to numerically simulate the free surface profile related to the water entry of a general bow section. Furthermore, the pressure distributions related to the free surface profiles obtained are computed for each case. The free surface flow at two impacting velocities and at different time points are presented and the separated water flow generated by the bottom slamming is captured. The secondary water impact due to the separated flow is an interesting phenomenon, which is also examined in the current study. Finally, in order to validate the computational results, the pressure distributions obtained from the numerical solution are compared against the available experimental results, and good agreements are displayed.
