Reliability based solution to the decision making dilemma in a software environment

Abstract

There are a large number of sourcing options available for a firm owner. The situation is all the more critical when decision between strategic, tactical or technical is involved. The decision making dilemma is the biggest problem area being faced by the owners wherein they have to decide if they have to build a component right from the scratch or they have to go in for an option for COTS solution. OSS is another factor that has emerged off late as a perfect substitute to the traditional developed software. The large number of decision taken and the outcome therein is required to be stored in a repository so as to enable the future referencing of the decision outcome. The varied process line and the checklist to be referred before getting into the decision making mode along with the repository have been elaborated in this paper. The variations in the process have also been discussed in detail with the different options discussed with pros and cons.
