Cybersecurity infrastructure challenges in IoT based virtual power plants

Abstract

Energy fuels industries and economy of a country and the demand for energy has increased rapidly in the recent past. Thanks to ICT driven technologies. The energy sector has witnessed a sea change in the form of newer technologies being applied like the Internet of Energies or Virtual Power Plants. As the sector is poised to expand rapidly, the growth has its own challenges in the form of cybersecurity. As numerous devices are interconnected, any compromise on any endpoint is a potential threat which could lead to catastrophic events either in the form economic losses or physical loss. Therefore, security is a key factor to be considered in IoT Virtual Power Plants. This paper takes a holistic look into various challenges and issues in IoT VPP.
