Abstract

The entire education system across the globe came to a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With schools and colleges being the first ones to shut down due to government instructions, educational institutions were left in a state of uncertainty. Thanks to technology, education could not be locked down, and teachers worldwide embraced the new situation with confidence to continue their service. Teachers were one among the unsung heroes of the pandemic. This study aims to understand the impact of this drastic change on women professors in Chennai city. The challenges they faced and their job satisfaction levels during the online teaching are analysed in this paper. Traditional teaching guarantees a lot of interaction and fulfilment but in online teaching, the teacher had to find innovative ways to grasp the student’s attention. The virtual mode of instruction is dependent on many external and internal factors like the availability of the internet, comfort of quiet space at home, technology awareness and personal perceptions. This study reveals that most professors struggled initially to adapt to the new mode but adapted quickly to it with time. The lockdown and the pandemic gave extra responsibilities to women due to all family members working from home. Hence the study focuses on studying the women professor’s view and outlook towards the online teaching mode during the pandemic.
