Abstract

Tanacetum longifolium is a perennial, aromatic herb (Asteraceae), growing between 3300-5000 msl in the Himalaya. Essential oil of this genus was imported in India for use in Homeopathy and western medicine. Plants were collected at flowering stage, essential oil was extracted using Clevenger type apparatus and analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID. Eleven compounds have been identified from volatile oil constituting 83.0 % of the total essential oil, out of which major component was β-pinene (>55.37%).
