Abstract

In this study, the effects of altitude and soil conditions on the chemical compositions of essential oils of Juniperus communis were investigated. The yield of the essential oil obtained from hydrodistillation of the dried J. communis was 0.8 % v/w. The chemical composition of essential oils isolated from dried sprigs by Water - distillation of J. communis growing in the north of Iran was analyzed by GC-MS. The oil had pale yellow color and intensive odor. Sixty six compounds were identified in the essential oils of J. communis. The oils consisted mainly of monoterpen hydrocarbon. The first major constituent of all sprigs essential oils were sabinene as (13.14 %). The other dominant compounds in investigated sprigs essential oils of four different habitats were α-pinene (10.48 %), limonene (5.53 %), terpinen-4-ol (4.91 %) and germacrene D (2.37 %). The results indicated a significant correlation between some of the soil components and the essential oils composition and also yield of the essence.
