Characterization of the Essential Oil Components of Adapted Salvia sclarea L. (Clary sage) Plant Under Egyptian Environmental Conditions

Abstract

The essential oil (EO) of the Clary sage has many medicinal benefits such as antimicrobial and inflammatory activities. In Egypt, this essential oil (EO) is required in different food and drug industries. Thus, Clary sage seeds were imported from Germany for cultivation and acclimatized under the environmental conditions in Egypt. This research paper aimed to investigates the composition leaf and flower EOs of Clary sage plants that were cultivated in Egypt. Leaf and flower EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation technique and analyzed by Gas chromatography (GC) and Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Variations in the composition were observed in both the EOs. The content of leaf EO was 0.01-0.03 % and 0.1-0.2 % for flower EO. Sclareoloxide (27.3 %), thymol (20.6 %), and caryophyllene oxide (9.9 %) were detected as the main components in leaf EO; while sclareol (33.9 %), linalool acetate (10.6 %), and manoyl oxide (9.6 %) were identified as the main compounds in flower essential oil (EO). Various identified components belonged to five chemical groups such as MH, OM, SH, OS, and OD. OS (50.6 %) was the main group in the leaf essential oil (EO), while the OD (48.3 %) formed the major group in flower essential oil (EO).
