Chemical Profile, Antioxidant and Antifungal Activity of Essential Oil from Cladanthus eriolepis

Abstract

This work represents the first report on the chemical composition, antioxidant, and antifungal activity of Cladanthus eriolepis essential oil. The GC/MS analysis of different parts of C. eriolepis (whole plant, leaves, and flowers) revealed sixty components representing 83.3 to 90.9 % of C. eriolepis essential oils. The major constituents of C. eriolepis whole plant essential oil, were α-pinene (13.0 %), isobutyl angelate (10.7 %), 2-methylbutyl angelate (9.5 %), germacrene D (7.1 %), and sabinene (4.4 %). For the leaves the main compounds were isobutyl angelate (23.9 %), 2-methylbutyl angelate (20.0 %), isobutyl isobutyrate (8.7 %), 2- methylbutyl isobutyrate (6.5 %) and β-bisabolene (5.2 %). However, β-bisabolene (36 %), isobutyl angelate (10.2 %), isobutyl isobutyrate (7.6 %), 2-methylbutyl angelate (5.9 %), and γ-curcumene (4.2 %) were the main compounds of the essential oil extracted from the C. eriolepis flowers. The antioxidant tests carried out show that the essential oil of the whole plant exhibited an important antioxidant activity using DPPH (558.52±9.15 μg/ mL), FRAP (28.69±1.42 μg/mL), and β-carotene bleaching assays (320.02±4.42 μg/mL). The radial growth methods show that the essential oil from the whole plant shows great activity against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. albedinis, ranging from 35.80 % to 86.20 % at 2000 ppm and 4000 ppm respectively. The obtained results promote the potential uses of C. eriolepis for controlling “Bayoud” disease and also in therapeutic areas.
