Abstract

Evaluation of a fibre-optical system bas been carried out on the basis of prominent related parameters, such as merits, economic considerations, consumer acceptability etc. The important tool ‘Value-in-use’ has also been used for this purpose. Selection criteria and relevant considerations for the selection of components such as light source, fibre, detector, etc. have been pointed out. Finally, the design of a fibre-optical link has been presented by two methods namely (i) using trade-off curves and (ii) using design formulae. Future trends have been spelt out.
