SPOT Satellite Detection and Analysis of Urban Spatial Growth Regimes in a Pre‐colonial African City

Abstract

SPOT satellite data was used to monitor the urban environment and spatial growth regimes of the traditional African city of Ile‐Ife in Nigeria. Three regimes of spatial pattern of land use developments were identified: pre‐colonial, colonial, and post colonial. The urban land use characteristics of each regime was analyzed and attention was drawn to the environmental planning and policy implication of the results.
