Pages 5-42 | Published online: 30 Jan 2012

Abstract

The main aim of this article is to present an overview of work done on text/discourse in South Africa in order to establish the trends and target areas of research done in this field in this country. It is evident from the available data that the study of text/discourse still has a long way to go towards maturity and being recognized as an independent discipline. Some aspects of textual research have been explored in a useful way but it seems there are many gaps in the total output. However, one should not be too negative about the research output in this regard as there are positive signs of more researchers getting involved in this field.
