Abstract

This article focusses on the relationship between two constructions of similar structure—constructions of which the noun in the subject position does not feature as the agent, but as the theme of the verb: Die ys smelt (1)/Die skoene dra lekker (2). A clear distinction is made between ergative (1) and middle (2) constructions. The hypothesis is that middles are derived in the syntax; ergatives in the lexicon. Thus, middle pairs are generated by a syntactic rule of Move X and are therefore transitive while in the lexicon. Ergative pairs are generated by a lexical rule of Move X and therefore have both a transitive and an intransitive form in the lexicon.
