Launch of the Case Studies 4: Case Studies on Failure Investigations in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering

Failure of structures occur in all parts of the world as the result of design errors, construction defects, abuse or misuse, ageing and deterioration of the structure, lack of maintenance, as well as environmental effects such as wind, flood, earthquakes, among others and obviously, human errors.

Case Studies 4 (CS4) on “Failure Investigations in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering” is the result of the work lead by Task Group 5.1 “Forensic Structural Engineering” as to provide a technical bulletin of emblematic structures, from buildings to bridges, including structural foundation investigations, to show procedures that can be used when dealing with structural failures. In this CS4, in addition to obtaining a deeper insight into the technical causes of the structural failure, the reader would be duly informed about the different countries’ legal issues related to the investigation process. A uniform and rigorous structure while presenting the 16 different case studies on forensic structural investigations will allow the reader to obtain a large spectrum of the different investigation processes and their specificity.

The official launch of this first edition of Case Study 4 took place during the IABSE Congress in New Delhi on September 19th in the format of a special session during the Pre-Congress Workshop on Forensic Structural Engineering under the theme of “Reliable Forensic Investigation – Causes, Investigation Methods and Lessons Learned to Mitigate Failures”. A first copy of CS4 “out of the press” was handed over to IABSE President Tina Vejrum, a copy duly signed by co-editors Fabrizio Palmisano and Laurent Rus.

CS4 is aimed at young, mid-career and experienced structural engineers who want to acquire a better understanding of failure mechanisms towards improving their design, inspection, construction, administrative, and other project-related practices to avoid pitfalls that may lead to failure. It also aims at those wanting to acquire a working knowledge of the challenging professional practice of forensic structural engineering.

This book is available as a complimentary ebook for all IABSE members under the Members Area (www.iabse.org), and the hardcopy is available here: https://www.iabse.org/Onlineshop.
